Number Cake

Number Cake

I love cake!  I think I say that at least every other day in my life.  So when I saw a similar cute number cake on pinterest or facebook or some social media platfrom I was so inspired to do it myself.  Our bakeries around here have the BEST cakes but they are not as flexible when it comes to decorating.  That is why I mainly order "naked" cakes and then DIY the details myself for most of our families celebrations.  I went to my local grocery store ordered 1/4 sheet cake with frosting on the side and picked up some edible decor.

Here is the step by step tutorial

ORDER AND PICK UP CAKE

We were only serving the 4 of us so I just ordered a 1/4 sheet cake naked and asked for the frosting on the side.  They were a little confused but I just explained to them that I was doing my own thing and showed them a pic!  I’m used to confusing people because I always have something random going on!

PICK YOUR TOPPINGS

This is a super fun thing to do.  You can pick anything you want!  I decided to make it PLENTIFUL, with flowers, sweets, candy, cookies, popcorn to sum up a fruitful 5 years of marraige.  You could just do all candy, or all flowers or maybe a theme to correspond with your party.  Anything goes and its so fun to get creative!  (tag me please @simply_may_ if you re-create this so I can see all your cakes!)

CUT CAKE INTO YOUR NUMBER

I just eyeballed it!  You could totally use a template number (print one online) or large number stencil.  I don’t believe everything always has to be perfect there is so much charm in DIY!

CUT CAKE IN HALF DOWN THE CENTER TO CREATE A TOP & BOTTOM

As you can see my number broke a little bit that’s nothing frosting or a stratigically placed flower can’t fix!

PIPE ABOUT 1 INCH CIRCLES ON TOP OF BOTTOM PIECE

This doesn't have to be perfect as you can see mine.  I did 2 lines of dots you can perfect the dots at the very end of this tutorial.

ADD THE TOP BACK ON AND PAINT A THIN LAYER OF FROSTING

Since this was my first time I started by doing piping (top right corner) but quickly decided to just frost the whole thing and then add pipping where necessary.

DECORATE BY WORKING IN CLUSTERS

IMG_9134.JPG

In design, everything is better in odd numbers.  I will walk you through how I did my decor but like I said you can add anything you like!  I started the design by working in little clusters and started with the corners of the cake almost like a border to call out the edges.  Start by piping a 1 inch circle of frosting on the top left corner and adding a flower on top of the pipping. Then add a sliced lengthwise strawberry and a raspberry for your cluster of 3, try to sink it into that little one inch circle of pipping you just did.  That was my starting point and from there I did the same thing at every edge/corner starting with the pipping and then adding to that.  I then added in a few large pieces to the cake, the macaroon and the cookies to make it look cohesive and from there I worked into the centers till I met each edges of all the larger clusters and everything was filled in.  Every time you add something you don't have to use pipping unless its needed, use your best judgement.

ADD A LITTLE MORE PIPING TO THE CENTER WHERE THE TOP MEETS BOTTOM

This was my finished cake, I wish I took more pics so you could see the design process but I think I explained it pretty good.  The top right in this pic you can see how I pipped more frosting in so the top and the bottom met better.

SMILE, CELEBRATE, LIGHT and EAT THE CAKE!
